Foot and ankle conditions

What Is the Hip?

The hip is a ball-and-socket joint that consists of the head of the femur and the socket of the pelvis. Considered one of the most stable joints in the body, the hip is responsible for supporting the body’s weight and enabling a range of movements.

What Are Common Hip Conditions and Injuries?

Common hip conditions in Singapore include:

  • Hip Pointer – This is a hip condition wherein the top of the ileum called iliac crest becomes bruised or torn, leading to hip pain. Causes of this injury include a direct blow to the hip, a quick twist of the body or a hard fall.
  • Hip Bursitis – The bursa is a closed fluid-filled sac that serves as a slippery cushion to reduce friction between joints. Hip bursitis occurs if the bursa becomes inflamed or irritated. There are two bursae in the hip: the greater trochanter that protects the pointed hip bone; and the iliopsoas bursa that is located on the groin side of the hip. When inflamed, the former is called trochanteric bursitis and the latter is called iliopsoas bursa.
  • Osteoarthritis – As weight-bearing joints, the hip is naturally susceptible to developing arthritis. When this happens, the cartilage that serves as a cushion for the joints wears away and eventually becomes rough. At the same time, the protective joint space between the bones decreases. This can cause friction, bone damage and joint inflammation, all of which lead to chronic pain and limited mobility.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis – This is a type of autoimmune disease that attacks the healthy joints of the hips, causing excess production of synovial fluid and inflammation of tissues. Rheumatoid arthritis can cause pain, swelling, and stiffness of the joints.
  • Hip Fracture – This refers to breaks or cracks in the top portion of the thigh bone or femur. Injury and hard falls are the primary causes of this condition.
